Brookfield Begins 2024 Water Main Improvements and Lead Water Service Replacement Projects

The Village of Brookfield kicked off construction on two more public infrastructure projects this week -- our 2024 Water Main Improvements and our standalone 2024 Lead Water Service Line Replacement Project.

The 2024 Water Main Improvements Project will include the replacement of approximately 6,000 feet of water main and all related appurtenances, installation of copper water services, restoration of disturbed areas, and other related work.

The project is divided between 7 locations around the Village where water main replacement and other related work will occur. You can view a map showing these 7 locations by clicking here.

A construction notice was distributed to the properties located within the first two streets on the projects that have commenced – Brookfield Avenue (shown at right) and Henrietta Avenue. Similar notices will be distributed to the other locations ahead of their construction starting.

The Village also commenced Phase I of its three-phase 2024 Lead Water Service Line Replacement Project this week.  Over the coming several years, the Village of Brookfield will be replacing all of the lead water service lines -- water pipes connecting water mains in the public way to water meters in private properties.

There are about 6,800 water service lines in Brookfield and about one-third of them -- around 2,200 -- are made of lead. Those lead lines will be replaced as part of this capital initiative.

The Village, via a water rate increase passed in 2022, is paying the full cost for the replacement of each lead water service line. In 2024, the Village is planning to replace approximately 700 lead water service lines at a cost of roughly $7.5 million.

Brookfield strategically plans to replace all the lead water services with Street Improvement Projects and Water Main Improvement Projects. Village staff and the Village Engineer are developing the long-term Street Improvement Plan.

Although the 2024 Lead Water Service Line Replacement Project covers a large portion of the Village, the contractor will typically only be working on a few select streets/blocks at a time, not all throughout town. You can view a map of the locations where lead water service lines will be replaced in 2024 by clicking here.

This week, the contractor began work at the following locations:

  • Morton Avenue (Garfield – 31st)
  • Madison Avenue (Washington – Grand)
  • Fairview Avenue (Maple – Sunnyside)
As with the 2024 Water Main Improvements Project, residents can track the project's status by signing up for our newsletter at the bottom of the Village of Brookfield website homepage or by visiting the Lead Service Line Replacement Project GIS map.
