The Rain Barrel Program offered by the Village of Brookfield and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) has seen great success. The Village has ordered and delivered over 2,500 rain barrels as of September 2016, with Brookfield having one of the highest participation rates in the region (as a percentage of households).
In order to ensure that those rain barrels are available for years to come, residents should remember to winterize them this fall. Winterizing rain barrels is easy. Simply drain the water and open the spigot. Additional actions to protect rain barrels would be turning the rain barrel upside down or storing it inside during the winter.
The Rain Barrel Program will be ending in December 2016, but rain barrels will continue to be available for purchase directly though the MWRD, or at many local hardware stores.
